About MAAS

The British Universities Film & Video Council (BUFVC) and the Open University were funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) to develop the Managing Agent and Advisory Service (MAAS) from 2000.

MAAS was a national body acquiring moving pictures and sound for delivery to the UK Higher and Further Education community. Content is currently delivered through the Film & Sound Online service and will remain free of charge to subscribing institutions until at least July 2009.

MAAS was responsible for selecting the material for Film & Sound Online, clearing rights and preparing the content for delivery. EDINA designed and developed Film & Sound Online and is responsible for the hosting and delivery of the service.

MAAS responsibilities:

Managing Agent
  • identified appropriate collections and prioritised content for clearance
  • obtained advice from groups of academic and industry professionals
  • cleared third party rights and brokered contracts
  • prepared the content and metadata for delivery through Film & Sound Online
Advisory Service
  • provided information and feedback to users wishing to obtain access
  • promoted and advised on the use of appropriate technology and tools
  • offered guidance on pedagogy
  • gave user support and online advice
  • ran a help desk for queries on all aspects of online moving pictures and sound

The MAAS service came to an end on 31 July 2005.
